nLIGHT Europe was born in 2020 when nLIGHT Inc. acquired OPI Photonics, a dynamic Italian SME located in Torino (northwestern Italy), founded in 2012 by Andrea Braglia, at the time a fresh PhD laureate, and Guido Perrone, Assistant Professor at the Politecnico di Torino. Since the beginning its activity was focused on novel architectures for high power laser diodes (multi-emitter diode laser modules for fibre laser pumping or direct diode processing), kW range free-space optics systems, high power pulsed laser delivery systems (high energy, high peak power pulse delivery through specialty photonic crystal fibres). After the acquisition, nLIGHT Europe furtherly developed, quickly becoming the nLIGHT centre for beam delivery for the industrial market, with a ISO 7 class cleanroom, device assembly capability, fibre processing equipment and high power laser characterization lab. nLIGHT Europe is now serving with its products some of the main players in laser material processing and, specifically, additive manufacturing. nLIGHT is WAVETAILOR’s technology provider for near infrared direct diode laser systems, both for powder bed fusion and direct energy deposition, and the beam delivery systems to support the effective integration in partners’ machines. nLIGHT Europe will also coordinate the development of a centralized laser control unit that would satisfy the specific needs of the two different LBAM processes in which they will be used, allowing an easy switch of wavelengths, a full control of laser power and status and a reliable monitoring of laser parameters.
